This post is the first in a series surrounding the Five Truths of all top-level freelancers.
The topic for today is our first truth:
All top-level freelancers are super serious about their businesses, and work at them full-time.
You’ll never meet a top level freelancer that calls their work a “side-hustle” or doesn’t give it 100% of their attention.
Think about it: When your freelancing job is just a side job, it’s not really your job at all.
A side hustle is fine, but it’s not going to help you do any of the following:
Only turning your skills into a real, serious business venture will help make any of those things possible. If you want to deliver super awesome premium referral worthy work to big name clients, you need to be dedicated 110% to your business. Otherwise the math just doesn’t work out:
Giving 100% to your job with your employer, and 10% to your freelancing will. not. work. You will wind up burnt out.
Moonlighting and side hustles are not going to get you the income, the recognition, and the totally badass career that you want.
As a caveat, there is one condition where I recommend moonlighting. If you’ve gone through my free course 3K in 30 Days then you know all about this (if you haven’t, for serious go do that RIGHT now - get it here >>).
When you decide to start freelancing full time, you need to come up a chunk of money to cover your expenses for at least two months. Sometimes this money can be difficult to secure, and moonlighting temporarily can help fill the void.
If you’re still with me, you’re probably thinking “Okay, but HOW?” How do you start freelancing full time? How do you take on that risk and leave your comfy, predictable job behind?
Well first, let’s talk about your comfy, predictable job.
The truth, it’s not comfy or predictable at all. You could lose that job at any given moment and then what would happen to you? Just because you’re getting a regular paycheck, you shouldn’t be lulled into thinking your job is secure.
Downsizing, economic failures, irritating your supervisor, outgrowing your position, needing more income, starting a family, falling ill, needing to care for an ill relative… any of these things could completely disrupt your comfy, predictable job and leave you with your hands tied.
Dependency is scary, isn’t it? That kind of dependency is, in fact, more risky than anything.
When you work for yourself, the only one in control is you. Even when you eventually disappoint a client, lose out on a job, have a slow month… the very nature of client based businesses mean that your income streams are diversified.
This means that one loss does not spell disaster. Clients can easily and quickly be replaced.
Real life, family emergencies, illnesses, children, vacations - these can all fit and flow with your work, because a well managed client-based business is both agile and portable. Your business can grow, shrink, and travel as you need it to.
3K in 30 Days is one of the best primers out there for those of you awesome entrepreneurs looking to dive in. It’s free, and each day (for 8 days) your lesson will be sent straight to your inbox. It seriously doesn’t get easier. You don’t even have to remember a user name and password. Register here >>
